## Secondary Math I (9th grade)

Course disclosure in English and Spanish.

The fundamental purpose of Mathematics I is to formalize and extend the mathematics that students learned in the middle grades. The critical areas, organized into units, deepen and extend understanding of linear relationships, in part by contrasting them with exponential phenomena, and in part by applying linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend. Mathematics I uses properties and theorems involving congruent figures to deepen and extend understanding of geometric knowledge from prior grades. The final unit in the course ties together the algebraic and geometric ideas studied. The Mathematical Practice Standards apply throughout each course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations.

## Secondary Math I Honors (9th grade)

This class will meet with Secondary 1 and will cover the same material. In addition to the regular classwork, honors students will be required to meet 3 times per term after school to work on an honors project. These 4 projects will cover the material that has been declared as “Honors” by the Utah core.

## Secondary Math II (10th grade)

The focus of Secondary Math ll is on quadratic expressions, equations, and functions; comparing their characteristics and behavior to those of linear and exponential relationships from Mathematics l as organized into 6 critical areas or units. The need for extending the set of rational numbers arises and real and complex numbers are introduced so that all quadratic equations can be solved. The link between probability and data is explored through conditional probability and counting methods, including their use in making and evaluating decision. The study of similarity leads to an understanding of right triangle trigonometry and connects to quadratics through Pythagorean relationships. The mathematical Practice Standards apply throughout each course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations.

Students in Secondary Mathematics III will focus on pulling together and applying the accumulation of learning that they have from their previous courses. They will apply methods from probability and statistics, expand their repertoire of functions to include polynomial, rational, and radical functions, they will expand their study of right triangle trigonometry and will bring together all of their experience with functions and geometry to create models and solve contextual problems. The mathematical Practice Standards apply throughout each course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations.

Secondary Math III Honors as well as units on series, limits and end behavior, and polar coordinates. The course will be more quickly paced and prepare students for AP Calculus.

## Math Lab

Course disclosure in English and Spanish.

Math Lab is an elective class that extends and enriches what students learn in their core math class. In this class, students will practice and refine computation skills, use algebraic thinking to strengthen understanding of numbers, arithmetic and work with variables, and explore patterns and concepts of geometry. Purposeful connections to other content areas are also made.

## Mathematical Decision Making for Life

Course disclosure in English and Spanish.

Mathematical Decision Making is a four-quarter course for seniors. The course includes mathematical decision making in finance, modeling, probability and statistics, and making choices. Students will make sense of authentic problems and persevere in solving them. They will reason abstractly and quantitatively while communicating mathematics to others. Students will use appropriate tools, including technology, to model mathematics. Students will use structure and regularity of reasoning to describe mathematical situations and solve problems. Calculus AB is primarily concerned with developing the students’ understanding of the concepts of calculus and providing experience with its methods and applications. The courses emphasize a multi-representational approach to calculus, with concepts, results, and problems being expressed graphically, numerically, analytically, and verbally. Students will develop the understanding of the inter-connectedness of these four approaches to mathematics. The connections among these representations also are important.

## AP Statistics

The course includes the following topics: univariate, bivariate, and categorical data patterns and models, and statistical inferences and significance tests. It is offered every other year.
