About
Salt Lake Center for Science Education, a 6-12 lab school, is a partnership between Salt Lake City School District and University of Utah. Located in the Rose Park neighborhood of Salt Lake City, SLCSE has students from throughout the city and suburbs. Some students come for the commitment to science, others for the tight-knit community, and others because of the creative curriculum. We welcome visitors!
The Details
Salt Lake Center for Science Education (SLCSE) is a free charter school sponsored by Salt Lake City School District with 192 students in grades 6-8 and 210 students in grades 9-12. The school opened in fall of 2008 and graduated its first senior class in spring of 2013. SLCSE is accredited by the Northwest Accreditation Commission (an accreditation division of AdvancED). Admission is non-discriminatory and open to all Utah residents. When applications exceed the number of spaces available positions are filled by lottery. Based on the large number of applications from the first six years, a fraction (22%) of applicants are admitted each school year.
Demographics
SLCSE is located in the heart of the Rose Park neighborhood in the northwest area of Salt Lake City. Just over half of our students are residents of the neighborhood (neighborhood defined as west of I-15, south of I-215, and north of 2100 South). Approximately 25% come from Salt Lake City School District east of I-15, and the remainder from outside of the Salt Lake City School District boundaries. Students attending our school commute within a radius reaching as far as 15 miles.
The demographics of the school mirror that of the Salt Lake City School District. The socioeconomic diversity in our student body brings both opportunities and challenges. Our diversity has pushed us to build an inclusive school where differences are not only openly discussed, but celebrated. We have been largely successful at creating a very integrated community. At the same time, our challenge is that some of the students have been very successful throughout their school careers and others have experienced a variety of struggles. We do not track students, therefore it is not uncommon to have a student reading at the 12th grade level in class with a student that is reading at the 4th grade level. Differentiating our curriculum is constantly at the forefront of our faculty discussions and we are always looking for ways to be more effective with individuals.
By the numbers, as of Fall 2018:

48.85% Eligible for free/reduced lunch (we are a Title I school)
4.3% African American
2.0% Asian
39.95% Hispanic
4.6% Multi-Racial
2.3% Pacific Islander
57.2% White
52.89% Total Minority
The Building
The school has recently completed a remodeling project. Seismic upgrades, fire sprinklers, new windows, new lighting, air conditioning, and new science labs were the major components of the upgrade. The building was previously used for Northwest Middle School and housed over seven hundred students. The smaller population of SLCSE students has allowed us plenty of space to work effectively with our students. There are two new science labs for use with 7th, 8th, biology, chemistry and AP Environmental Science students. The 9th grade physics lab is also new. The auditorium was made smaller to provide a more intimate setting that could be used by students and teachers. The school has two interior atriums that have served as teaching spaces for a variety of classes from Outdoor Exploration to Mathematics. One of the wrestling rooms has been converted into a horizontal climbing gym which is more compatible with our healthy lifestyles approach to physical education.
